Here are some edits I made on short articles (100 words or so) intended for publication in the college alumni magazine for Brigham Young University (BYU). The intended audience is current and former members of the university. These edits needed to be focused on substantive editing, but occasionally, copyediting was also required.
This first sample ("Enter to Learn, Go Forth to Serve Delicious Ice Cream") is an information piece about BYU's summer ice cream consumption as well as about the new president of BYU. The author, who focused her article toward readers of the BYU alumni magazine, wanted help choosing a title. I helped with that and also edited her piece for both flow and emphasis.
In this next sample, "Wells Continually Springing up to Opportunities," the author's intended audience was readers of the BYU alumni magazine. Most of my editing was focused on helping the author use their facts to greatest advantage.
This next sample shows the editing I performed for "A Hastening of the Work," a short article on what the author referred to as "hastening the work of salvation," or the increase in LDS missionary efforts, at BYU. The intended audience was both current and former BYU students. For this sample, I performed both substantive and copyediting and tried to help the author focus her message.
The final piece, which was untitled when I received it, is a review of an art exhibit at BYU's Museum of Art (MOA). The author was writing to current and former students of the university. My editing for this sample was mostly focused on the flow and tone of the article.
